Still want more institutional racism?

I could just cite the statistics of every federal prison. Or I could point to the massive disparity between white and black unemployment. Or the just as dismaying disparity between black and white income. Or I could find all the studies that show employers are significantly less likely to call back applicants with names like “Tyrone” and “Latisha” than they are to call back applications with names like “Adam” or “Steve”, despite the applications being virtually the same. Or I could point to the minimum sentencing periods for drug convictions that, until Obama recently rectified the Reagan-inspired problem, hurt black communities far more than white communities. But instead I’ll use the more convenient example of Tulia, Texas, a place about which everyone needs to know.

  1. Numbers? Okay lets look at numbers. The murder statistics are my favorite…. Bear in mind I’m not advocating racism, these are the 2005 numbers, there could be newer ones but my google-fu was not strong enough to find them:

Black people made up around 13% of the US population.
Black people made up 49% of the murders.

Sure looks like racism on the surface. If you go deeper:

93% of all the black people murdered were murdered by other black people.

I’m sure there is a massive explanation on why this is my fault as a cracker. More likely is culture. Races tend to self segregate to a degree, not necessarily physically but culturally segregate.

Most of the other crime rates show something similar, the fact is that if you are a black person, and there is a black person behind you on the street there is statistical reason to be nervous, even Jesse Jackson thinks so.

I’m not sure these numbers mean that this should be taken as true though. Most murders happen in urban environments where black populations are high, the same is true in white neighborhoods of similar economic situation, history and location.

Those number tell me to watch out in the city, regardless of the race of the person behind you.

  2. If you wanted to talk about the number of blacks on death row than I agree, there is some racial disparity. Of course my solution is to execute more white murderers not get rid of the death penalty.

  3. Shouldn’t comment s have something to do with the topic?

  4. I think prison statistics were part of the topic, albeit a small one.

“I could just cite the statistics of every federal prison.”

  5. When liquor was illegal there was a huge increase in white minority crime. Does anybody else see the connection?

    Enjoy.
