Mostly it is that they refuse. The deeply religious are taught to go by faith alone and to not think.
I may need a clarification here. “Thinking philosophically” is vastly overrated in my experience; what matters far more is thinking RATIONALLY.
The term I used can certainly be said to include rationality, but it also includes clever thinking.
