New Central Maine Publication

By Staff

Welcome.

Without Apology is a free monthly publication devoted to spreading good ideas throughout the central Maine region.

No idea is so sacred as to deserve unquestioned deference. Indeed, many ideas are just bad. All ideas should be open to criticism.

In this vain, Without Apology is an open-forum, editorial-style format. There is no one agenda for this publication except insofar as a presentation of good ideas is an agenda. And with this non-agenda agenda comes a storm against bad ideas. These are given too much respect all too often.

But there should be no misunderstanding. Without Apology is not out to be disrespectful for the sake of doing so. Sometimes ideas do deserve respect, even if they are pointed in the wrong direction.

But this does not mean all ideas. Do you believe Earth is 6,000 years old? If so, you have utterly silly, inane beliefs which ignore all evidence and deserve nothing but scorn, ridicule, and dismissal. Do you believe it is okay to deny your fellow citizen rights? If so, you’re a bigot, and no one respects a bigot. Do you believe you should treat people like dirt simply because you can? If so, you should be forced to face all the criticism that comes to such demeanors.

Without Apology has no fear in taking a strong tone. It has no fear in telling people when they have bad ideas. It isn’t out to dump all over everyone; It will offer praise when praise is due. But it is not here to coddle. It is not the mainstream media.

So please explore what Without Apology has to offer. Let us know what you think.

Leaving comments

I almost never sift through all the spam comments that get automatically blocked from my blog, so it’s quite possible that perfectly legitimate posts are getting deleted. I recently found one that had been blocked because it had too many links in it (I’ve upped the limit to 5).

I am not the type of person that is terrified of people, say, calling me out for a long history of dishonesty and academic squalor, so I do not have any settings in place which require approval of comments. If you make a post and it does not show up either immediately or at least very, very soon, there is some reason which has nothing to do with my approval. Make a second comment or try commenting on another post and let me know that something is up.

Update: To make up for the long delay from when that missed comment was made and when it was actually posted, here is a link to a post by the commenter, The Godless Artist. He describes his unfortunate time at a creationism seminar. Isn’t it interesting how atheists are willing to hear what the creationists say, but so few creationists are willing to actually go get the proper education on evolution?

For the sake of…Twitter?

Apparently FTSOS got a couple of hits from Twitter. I’m curious which posts were linked and who did it. I encourage such activity greatly. Two million more times and I’ll be as popular as PZ.

Leave of absence

I will be driving up to Baxter State Park today to hike the 100-Mile Wilderness. This is the most remote section of the Appalachian Trail, so I’m pretty excited.

What this means is that I will be gone for about a week. I’ll return the night of the 25th at the earliest, more like during the 26th, and if it’s slow-going, then on the 27th. Anything beyond that will be unexpected.

In lieu of my ability to post each day, I’ve scheduled a series of posts for each day. Hopefully things will go swimmingly. In fact, to make sure they do, this post is my first test as it is actually Wednesday night right now and I’ve scheduled this for 8:00a.m. Saturday morning. Let’s hope you’re reading this.

In short, I won’t be actively posting or responding to any comments. Instead, I’ll be enjoying the beauty that is the Maine woods, as wrought by the slow processes of a godless Nature.

Oh, you guys

I get lots of odd things searched on this blog. It all shows up on my stats page. For instance, someone believes “sex toy fucking” or some variant thereof is either 1) hilarious or 2) will one day yield fruitful results. Keep trying, my friend, but I think Google will give you faster results.

Other than that most searches are “natural selection not random” or something similar. The post being searched is one of my post popular pieces. I believe it’s being passed around in some email because I see a link to inboxes, but I obviously can’t look at anything there. Of course, I’m not the most tech savvy, so I say this with great tentativeness. (If anyone is interested, this is my most popular post of all time.)

Anyway, I’ve recently come across my favorite search result so far.

is ben stein a conservative fruit

Surprise me with some good ones. I may make a whole separate page for these things.

Short Hiatus

Science has temporarily halted while it waits for my computer to get fixed. Or it just piles up so I have a lot to blog about when I finally regain regular Internet access. One or the other.

In other news, this website gets roughly 25 views a day without me sneaking in (always relevant, never spammy) links at other blogs to generate traffic. I guess I’m sort of proud of that.

Widgets

I just added a couple of widgets for better navigation. Scroll down to see them on the left side. Leave a comment if you think I should add something more.

5,000 hits

In the 7+ weeks this blog has been in existence, it has just passed the 5,000 hits mark officially on Dec 5. Yay arbitrary numbers!

And thanks.

Check out this blog

I recently came across the blog Obsessed with reality. It’s really quite well written, especially this piece (which is the primary reason I am advocating for it).

Give it a looksie-loo.

Comments

Some comments I receive get automatically sent to the spam filter for wordpress blogs. This is usually good since most of the comments there are actually spam. Unfortunately, some genuine posts are occasionally sent there. If you make a post and don’t see it up here, that’s probably what happened. You don’t need to repost, however. I haven’t reached a point where I can’t sift through the spam filter to find the quality posts. I’ll keep an eye out. Thanks for your patience.
