Thought of the day

Religion is a major obstacle in the fight for science. It doesn’t always stand in its way (some people just don’t care, even bring it along for the spiritual ride), but it is often at odds. I don’t mean to imply that science and religion are compatible. Religion simply has the ability to occasionally get out of the way. But more often than not, it doesn’t do this. That is why it must be attacked and thrown around and beaten up. Do that and the door to science opens another crack.

The last two minutes in close games by sport:

Baseball: Can’t really go by time, but one swing can change everything in the 9th. It’s quality.
Football: Sometimes good. Often it’s just kneeling.
Basketball: It’s team time outs, commercial time outs, more team time outs, different kinds of time outs, more commercial breaks, free throws, free throws, free throws, time out, time out, time out, free throw, commercial, free throw, commercial. Awful. Just awful.
Hockey: Utterly exciting. When can they pull the goalie? There’s such a flurry of action in front of the net! He rung the post! He tied the game! It’s the best two minutes in sports.

Really. How can anyone not love hockey?

Where is the intention in a mutation?

50% of being an atheist is correcting the strawmen people make up about us.

A Glorious Dawn

With musical talent like this, I don’t know what he was doing with all that science-y stuff.

Thought of the day

Holy books offer no useful knowledge which cannot be gained otherwise. They do, however, offer lots of nonsense which is a danger to reason, rationality, and the pursuit of science.

PZ Myers wrote about a new survey of religious beliefs. Read it, it’s good. But I especially like this reference to God.

Bearded Ape of Cosmic Proportions

But that isn’t completely accurate. All the concepts of gods so far have been rather small-minded and local so far.
