Not a big deal, big deal happens

Two people got married. Socially, this ought not be a big deal. Whatever. Good for those two people. But since this is another big step forward for equality, it is a big deal.

One bride wore a knee-length lace dress and pearls. The other bride wore a yellow shirt and white suit. And when a pastor pronounced them “partners in life this day and for always” Tuesday, they hugged and smiled in front of wedding guests and nearly a dozen TV cameras and reporters.Sinjoyla Townsend

On the first day same-sex couples could marry in Washington, brides Angelisa Young and Sinjoyla Townsend were the first of three couples taking the plunge in morning ceremonies at the offices of the Human Rights Campaign, which does advocacy work on gay, lesbian and transgender issues. Other ceremonies were planned throughout the day.

“Today was like a dream for me,” Young said.

  1. I admit that I had to learn why gays are not on some kind of agenda. While I had no animosity towards the gay community, I wondered why gays had to be sorted by who they slept with. “Why can’t they just keep it to themselves”, I would say when the topic came up.

It wasn’t until I stopped watching TV and started learning about how much I didn’t know, that I was able to see that I had it turned around. It was the un-gays who tried to paint all gays as one big evil that had to be eradicated. The fact that most of these shitheads were using the bible to excuse their hatred and fear-mongering is probably the main reason why I detest them so much. We atheists and gays have that much in common, anyway.

I can’t claim to just be some enlightened construction worker who came by this awakening all by myself, however. The fact that I lived in Key West while in HS definitely helped me see them as real people and not caricatures.

  2. Looking at the previous comment, I really gotta stop posting when I’m tired. Jeez.
