Let’s make it simple

The gay marriage issue is not about sexual orientation. I’ve said it again and again. It is about sex. Here is the best explanation why.

  • Straight man + straight woman = marriage
  • Straight man + gay woman = marriage
  • Straight man + gay man = no marriage
  • Straight man + straight man = no marriage
  • Gay man + gay man = no marriage
  • Gay man + gay woman = marriage
  • Straight woman + straight woman = no marriage
  • Straight woman + gay woman = no marriage
  • Gay woman + gay woman = no marriage

In every instance where a man and woman are on one side of the equation, marriage is allowed in every state. In every instance where the same sex is on the same side of the equation, marriage is not allowed in every state. The clear conclusion is that sexual orientation is not at issue in the least – legally speaking. Currently, the government is willfully discriminating on the basis of sex. That is illegal. It needs to stop.

  1. I couldn’t agree more.

  2. Brother + Brother = No Marriage.

  3. Sex isn’t the consideration with sibling marriages.

  4. Nicely put.

  5. A variety of factors, Grant, are considered in outlawing sibling marriages. Since the basis isn’t sex, it isn’t important to my point.

  6. What are the “variety of factors”?

  7. You’re sidetracking the argument. As long as the answer isn’t “sex”, then even if there is an illegal or illogical basis, it isn’t to the point.

  8. OH!

Oops. I’ve made an error. When you said, “The gay marriage issue is not about sexual orientation. I’ve said it again and again. It is about sex” you meant the same as “The gay marriage issue is not about sexual orientation. I’ve said it again and again. It is about gender“, right?

I agree. It’s all about gender. But then I don’t have a problem with distinguishing between males and females.

  9. I usually get crap when I use “sex” and “gender” interchangably – the soft (i.e., social) sciences primarily rely on wordplay over substance, so they’ve ruined quite a bit of practical discussion.

  10. I’ll not give you crap on this one, mate. I should have read more closely :)

  11. I don’t have a problem with distinguishing between males and females.

That’s because you live in a world without nuance. Reality is far more interesting. I fit into the gender binary myself (I’m a gay guy), but many people don’t. Transgender and intersex people do exist, and sticking your head in the sand doesn’t change that reality.

Sex and gender are not the same thing. Gender is the grammatical classification of objects.

    TRiG.
