Will they admit it when it doesn’t work?

There are religious groups planning prayer vigils in response to the Gulf of Mexico spill because they don’t know prayer doesn’t work.

The Wednesday event will be a sunset vigil that will last about 45 minutes, said Amanda Richardson Bacon, one of the organizers.

She said the Wednesday vigil is also intended as a community meeting and not a protest rally or national activity.

“Everyone is so angry and frustrated and we need to unite instead,” she said. “We’re all tired. We’re all frustrated. This is a chance to just turn it over to someone else for a minute.”

And when nothing happens, will they actually admit prayer is impotent? No. No, it will be God’s plan. I guess God being evil is okay sometimes, right?

  1. Who cares if foolish people want to waste their own time. Let them pray, flog themselves, bark at the moon or participate in any form of self delusion they prefer, as long as they don’t try to force anything on others.

  2. I don’t think whether it works or not is the issue here. As it says, they want to turn everything over to someone else for a minute. If prayer gives them a short break from feeling responsibility than it does work after a fashion. Calm down relax and than get back to work..

Sounds like its effective to believers.

  3. Self delusion usually is effective at appearing to relieve responsibility.

  4. Everyone needs a break every now and than. If it helps out a little than its worth it. Prayer has been shown to calm people.

  5. So does alcohol, some drugs, music, art, entertainment, conversation, lunch or dinner with friends or family.

  6. Or actually solving problems.

  7. Well its a good thing BP and the government are both all over this oil spill. they have done such a good jo- wait… could you describe reality to me again?

  8. You sure missed reality again, Nate. This thread is about prayer and how useless it is.

And for your information, BP is all over this. They just suck big time at it. That is what happens when large corporations go off and do whatever they please without being made to be accountable.

Back to the topic. Great response, Michael. Solving a problem is not something religions actually know how to do. They prefer to sit and console and say goddidit.

  9. A five part blog post on Why Prayer Is Nonsense.

  10. Yes evil big corporations. Damn that industrialization. Once Dick Cheney turns on the haliburton hurricane machine the oil spill will be made even worse. That is if he can take time away from praying on the grassy knoll.

  11. Yep, keep off topic, then you needn’t deal with the topic at hand. Hide much?

  12. I already said I didn’t think prayer was useless. What more is required?
