New warning labels for cigarettes

I would much rather see a phasing out of the sale of cigarettes, but this will do for now:

Rotting teeth. Diseased lungs. A corpse of a smoker. Nine new warning labels featuring graphic images that convey the dangers of smoking will be required by the Food and Drug Administration to be on U.S. cigarette packs by 2012.

Other images include a man with a tracheotomy smoking and a mother holding a baby with smoke swirling around them. The labels will include phrases like “Smoking can kill you” and “Cigarettes cause cancer.”

The labels, which the FDA released Tuesday, are a part of the most significant change to U.S. cigarette packs in 25 years. They’re aimed at curbing tobacco use, which is responsible for about 443,000 deaths in the U.S. a year.

  1. I notice you want government out of marriage but involved fully in smoking. Makes perfect sense. How about the government stays out of both? Smoking is legal… they have no right to tell a privately owned company what must be on their labels. Stand down big brother, and I’m not even a smoker.

  2. We all bear the cost if treating this who smoke.

I doubt the new packages will make much difference to those who smoke. Smoking has dropped significantly in the last 25 years and it will continue to drop as it becomes more unacceptable to the non-smoking majority. Health has not been as much of a motivator to stop smoking, even for many of those dying from it.

  3. I read or heard somewhere scientific studies show that only 10% of smokers die of smoking and smoking related diseases. Can someone confirm or deny this and cite some scientific data?

Until then, I question what is the source of anti-smoking crusade? What are their motives for saving lives? I bet it’s the same source as seat belts…the Insurance Industry on their never ending source for bigger and bigger profits through social engineering. Liberals and progressives are accused of social engineering all of the time but when capitalists pigs do it, well it is swept under the rug.

  4. See, this is one of the more obvious cases where libertarian philosophy fails. Why should the government be forcing private businesses to print warnings on their packs of poison?

It’s because they’re KILLING PEOPLE, that’s why. And the alleged ‘rights’ of corporations don’t mean a thing compared to that.

  5. It’s none of your business how other people kill themselves.

  6. I notice you want government out of marriage but involved fully in smoking. Makes perfect sense.

How can you interpret my support for laws which extend civil rights as a desire to get government out of marriage? You’re exactly wrong.

  7. Copyleft…..if cigarettes are killing people, why doesn’t the government make them illegal? Because they are the giving corporations the right to kill??????

  8. People make the choice to smoke, not one makes them. Tobacco companies haven’t killed any more people than Ford has.

I might be mistaken, but these huge taxes on smoking pay for an awful lot of stuff. Children’s health care comes to mind.
