Thought of the day

I don’t see how anyone can think David Barton even resembles anything like an historian.

One thing I’ve noticed in debates and conversations over FTSOS, Facebook, and elsewhere is that creationists love to throw around scientific terms. Of course, they have no idea what any of them really mean, but that doesn’t stop them. “Information” is a favorite, but there are even simpler ones. Unfortunately, when pressed to give definitions or in-depth explanations, there is little to no accountability. Don’t know what the hell you’re saying on Facebook? Someone challenge you? No worry. Just ignore it and move on. It’s the Internet. So in light of this, I’m instituting a personal policy of asking creationists to give me definitions of simple terms when I see them in person. Since these people obviously aren’t even interested in biology or any other science, it won’t be a fair fight, I know. But they have it coming.

I was reading The A-Unicornist and I was wondering: when are the creationists intelligent design advocates going to produce some research?

Excusing the god of the Old Testament comes with three distinct problems. First, he still did those awful things. I say this because the most common excuse is that all the laws and prohibitions and commands of the Old Testament were really only meant for the people of the time – specifically, the Jews. But so what? That doesn’t mean God didn’t commit genocide or destroy innocent families for nothing but his own sinful pride. Second, this common excuse (in fact, it seems to be the only excuse) makes God a moral relativist. This is in contradiction with the beliefs of most Christians that morality is absolute and objective. (These people aren’t even coherent.) Third, if the Old Testament or significant portions of the Old Testament are only relevant to an ancient culture, then why bother with it? Or why not at least exclude the parts that are irrelevant? I mean, I know Facebooking Christians do love to exclude the evil of Deuteronomy and Leviticus from their cherry-picked status updates, but why not just throw it away?

When I want to communicate poorly, I use emoticons.

I think that one is a klan member, but I'm not sure.

The great corporations which we have grown to speak of rather loosely as trusts are the creatures of the State, and the State not only has the right to control them wherever need of such control is shown but it is in duty bound to control them.

Value is born of action.

It’s difficult to point out what the absolute worst argument is from believers. They are so many choices. But at least one of the worst has got to be when they attempt to dispute that the burden of proof lies with them, not atheists or agnostics or anyone else not making the positive claim. Granted, most theists just ignore this argument rather than engage it, but every so often I see someone attempt to refute it.

And then I chuckle. With a grain of sadness.

“VEVO”, or whatever the hell that bullshit is, ruins YouTube videos. No, I do not want to go to a different screen, wait for ads to load all over the place, watch an ad, watch my video, then have another ad yell at me. And all the while the videos on the right side are apparently controlled by “VEVO”, thereby not showing me anything that is actually related to what I’m watching. Go to hell, VEVO.
