Thought of the day

The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together.

~Carl Sagan

Thought of the day

Religion has not merit. It is undeserving of this absurd respect demanded of it. It is something to be fully and robustly disdained. Worst yet, it’s untrue. I mean, come on. Virgin birth? Reincarnation? Shut the hell up, you crazy kooks

Bonus

Bonus thought of the day:

Rather than to dilute and delude one’s self with stories, tales, and myths of little worth, it seems far more reasonable to live every day in appreciation of Nature and its exquisiteness. This appreciation will go unnoticed, surely, by our grand, unconscious Creator – Nature herself – but the utter joy and beauty present in a view of the world based upon reality is surely more worthwhile than anything else to have been fathomed.

The proposition of a Comforting Creator seems, to me, so infantile that clinging to such a notion is nothing more than a belittling of the intricate tapestry that is the Cosmos.

This may be a repeat: Show me the intention in a mutation.

Thought of the day

I have an utter rage about me at the moment. The Oppressors want to deny citizens of my fair state their equal protections on the law. This is a denial of marriage as a right at all; should the Oppressors achieve their moral imposition, they shall have succeeded in making a marriage a privilege. They seek to undermine the very concept of rights. A clear violation of the 14th Amendment, such action would also have outraged the founding fathers.

“What is true of every member of the society, individually, is true of them all collectively; since the rights of the whole can be no more than the sum of the rights of the individuals.”

~Thomas Jefferson

Thought of the day

Religion is a major obstacle in the fight for science. It doesn’t always stand in its way (some people just don’t care, even bring it along for the spiritual ride), but it is often at odds. I don’t mean to imply that science and religion are compatible. Religion simply has the ability to occasionally get out of the way. But more often than not, it doesn’t do this. That is why it must be attacked and thrown around and beaten up. Do that and the door to science opens another crack.

Thought of the day

The last two minutes in close games by sport:

Baseball: Can’t really go by time, but one swing can change everything in the 9th. It’s quality.
Football: Sometimes good. Often it’s just kneeling.
Basketball: It’s team time outs, commercial time outs, more team time outs, different kinds of time outs, more commercial breaks, free throws, free throws, free throws, time out, time out, time out, free throw, commercial, free throw, commercial. Awful. Just awful.
Hockey: Utterly exciting. When can they pull the goalie? There’s such a flurry of action in front of the net! He rung the post! He tied the game! It’s the best two minutes in sports.

Really. How can anyone not love hockey?

Thought of the day

Maine is cold.

(Some thoughts are less profound than others.)

Thought of the day

Are those who are so ready to credit Christianity with the advancement of science also ready to blame Christianity for the existence of the Dark Ages?
