Thought of the day

Science simply represents our best effort to understand what is going on in this universe, and the boundary between it and the rest of rational thought cannot always be drawn.

  1. Except as noted elsewhere there are many areas of thought where science isn’t particularly useful.

  2. Nice try by Sam Harris; seems his main critics will be fellow atheists; of course, there is absolutely no evidence in history to back him up either.

  3. If you follow the discussions on Harris’ Project Reason site plus those on Russel Blackford’s site, Sean Carrol’s site and Richard Dawkins.net then making simple statements like that jack are foolish.

  4. I would say this idea is pretty problematic if one has to follow a series of discussions on numerous sites; either there is some straight forward reasons to believe that science can be used to investigate morality, or there is not.

But I can already predict the sort of morality that will be produced by science (or at least Sam Harris’ scientific investigations); it will afform the sort of morality that Sam Harris already believes to be true, and it will be dismissive of the morality he doesn’t except – true science of course doesn’t work that way.

It must be nice to live a life of absolute surety.

I am also uninterested in your prediction without listening to others’ views.

  6. I have listened to Harris’ presentation and will probably read his book when its available at the library; the fact you can’t articulate those views suggests to me they might not be all that worthwhile to begin with.

And prediction is part of investigating notions scientifically.
