Uh-oh, Reaganites

I wonder how many Republicans cry when they realize that we have Reagan on tape.

“Where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost.”

  1. Unfortunately I don’t see where free unions or collective bargaining have been forbidden.

Another thing, do you agree with every single thing Obama has said? If not I hardly see these as gotcha moments.

If it were up to me I would let unions bargain for anything they wanted, but I would let businesses kick the whole damned union out the door anytime they wished too. Freedom goes both ways.

Obama hasn’t extended collective bargaining rights to federal employees again though.

  2. Settle down Nate. At the end of the day Reagan was bashing unions, just not the communist ones. On Obama? He’s added himself to the short list of Nobel prize candidates who might also be brought up on war crimes charges.

I’m not swinging off the nuts of the right or left wing. That said, Obama is still loads better than Bush, even if he’s every bit as beholden to the military industrial and banking industrial complexes as Bush ever was.

    Enjoy.

  3. “All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress.”

  4. The guy was president of SAG. He didn’t forget everything before Alzheimer’s (better known as Republicanism) hit him.

  5. Actually, the usual dodge I’ve been hearing from Reagan worshipers is “But Saint Ronald wasn’t talking about PUBLIC sector unions.”

  6. My experience, from a former public manager’s perspective, is that public unions are needed if for no other reason than to keep management on their toes!! In my opinion, public unions are victims of ignorance and not the perpetrators of greed and arrogance because of:

    1) management’s lack of capability to effectively negotiate ( managers are seen as giving the store away with salary and benefits). Negotiations need skills. Management is not well trained for these skills. Unions are.

    2) The public pay structure (managers are supposed to be paid more so there is a hidden incentive for managers to give into the public unions).

    3) Governmnet is a political system and not in any way similar to business….It’s much easier to run a business than to effectivley and efficiently run a government operation. Those who say otherwise do not know wnat they are talking about.

We need unions for all the benefits the working guy gets(8 hr. day, weekends off, 40 hr, week, no child labor, etc. etc. etc. ) and we need Public Unions to set a benchmark for wages, salary, working conditions, and benefts.

Otherwise…..welcome to the Wallmart World and labors race to the bottom.
