God still doesn’t exist, alt-medicine is still quackery that cures nothing (including the flu, colon cancer, and diabetes), and Tom Brady is still the greatest NFL player of all time.

Michael holds a BA in Biology with a minor in Philosophy. He likes to spend his free time hiking and defending science, though not usually at the same time. Contrary to popular (but not scientific) belief, the positive and appropriate perception of science is undermined by religion, alternative medicine, the U.S. education system, and most science journalists.

Hi Michael.
I am a follower of your blog. I was wondering if you have seen this article and/or had thoughts on the topic. It seems ripe for a science-based perspective.
Happy New Year.
‘Raw water’ is the latest health craze. Here’s why drinking it may be a bad idea. http://wapo.st/2lPq0ip

It strikes me as nuts that people want “raw” water. I’ve done plenty of hiking in my day and I’ve been in plenty of different water situations. Whether bottled, from a lake, or from a stream, it all tastes basically the same so long as it’s properly filtered and sterilized (though tablets, which I rarely use, are distinctly bad). What isn’t basically the same is the level of safety. I’ve never had Giardia, but I’ve heard enough horror stories while out on the trail to know I want nothing to do with it.
At the very least, if people want to waste their money on “raw” water, they should get a UV wand to kill some of the (relatively) larger bacteria that might be in it.
